This event information is in support of two wonderful family-orientated charities, Peach Tree Perinatal Wellness (Brisbane-based local charity) and PANDA (Post and Ante Natal Depression Association – a national not-for-profit organisation). Our Luncheon is being held to raise awareness of antenatal and postnatal depression and anxiety, and to raise funds to support the above two organisations so they can provide their services to all mothers and family in need of support during this very difficult time.

It will be held on Friday the 7th of March, from 12.00 – 2.30pm in the Legends Room at the Gabba (tickets are $95/pp until end-Jan, then $110/pp). Some interesting facts around perinatal mental illness are listed below:

  1. 9,600 mothers and 6,000 fathers are currently experiencing postnatal depression in Queensland. This equates to 16% of mothers and 10% of fathers in the first 2 years after birth;
  2. The greatest cause of maternal death is suicide – not bleeding, infection or any other medical causes;
  3. Children of parents who take their own life are 6 times more likely to take their own lives;
  4. Children of parents with postnatal depression are more likely to develop their own mental illness, are more likely to have developmental delays and behavioural problems and are at an increased risk of other social difficulties in childhood and adulthood;
  5. Relationship breakdown is more common when postnatal depression and/or anxiety is involved; and
  6. Early detection and intervention is vital as it is proven that treatment works.
