The GBA’s Annual General Meeting was held onÂ Tuesday 30th June 2015.

The Association held a Networking Night on Tuesday 26th May hosted by the franchisee of Quest Woolloongabba â€“ Simon Russell.
The event was held at Guestâ€™s Rooftop Garden and when everyone came out of the lift, they were gob smacked with the exceptional views of Woolloongabba through to the Gabba Cricket Ground and the City as a backdrop â€“ a very special venue. Thanks Simon and his Team for the Venue and the Hospitality. What a great night.
We had approximately 30 members and guests attend the evening with plenty of networking and lively discussion around whatâ€™s happening in the Gabba.
Our Guest Speaker was Marketing Consultant â€“ Bruce Jacobs from Seventh Floor. Bruce was an excellent speaker. He spoke about his businesses and the success stories heâ€™s had analysing a businessâ€™ existing marketing plan and recommending more cost effective alternatives. In particular he spoke about the old â€śYellow Pagesâ€ť type marketing and the new Digital, Social Media and Web based marketing initiatives.
President Suzanne addressed the group and the evening finished with a â€śLucky Door Prizeâ€ť being won by Paul Hey â€“ Montague Developments.

For this monthâ€™s local Woolloongabba business profile I was lucky enough to sit down with Bruce Currie from Panther Data.Â Located at the corner of Annerley Rd and Park Rd, Panther Data has a great range of printing and data supplies.Â Bruce himself is one of the great characters of the Gabba business community, armed with a wealth of technical knowledge and a great sense of humour.
Tell us about the business is and what you do.
We have been in the Gabba since 1996, for 18 years now. I started in September 1987, operating from my bedroom at home.Â Then in September 1996 we moved into the Gabba, and started renting this building, and got a building built next door, with approval from the council.

A new street celebration showcasing the Woolloongabba precinctâ€™s unique characteristics of urban fine dining and antiques.
The Gabba Business Association will be proudly unveiling Stage 1 of the Woolloongabba Gateway Master Plan.
Students from the School of Architecture at the University of Queensland in conjunction with the Brain Institute of Qld, Gabba Business Association and Brisbane City Council have explored the idea of what a Healthy City Barometer can be â€“ and yes this involves BEES.
The evening will showcase different ideas of how to define the precinct of Woolloongabba, provide a dedicated green space for public use and community involvement and identify pathways and linkages to connect the Gabba to the CBD frame and reinforcing it as the Southern Gateway.
We also be formally saying farewell to our immediate Past President, Glendon Young who has held the position for the past 10 years.

Thank you for the opportunity to once again be President of this Association. This will be my last year as President of the Association. I will be succeeded by our VP from last year Suzanne Bosenquet. Suzanne is well known to regular meeting attendees and is the mastermind behind the Associationâ€™s latest project which I will speak about shortly.
The Association has once again had a busy year. The Association has continued to monitor business activity in the Gabba and provide a forum for business to unite to advance the interests of business in the Gabba. Steve Hammond and your executive team have continued working on Gabbafest to make it a reality but unfortunately the date has had to be moved again. We have seen the feasibility study for the cross river rail link now named the BAT Tunnel which the Premier says will proceed even though there is no money for it at the moment conclude. We have seen the completion of the sewerage upgrade and the vacant site in Gibbons St is up for sale. We have contested the inclusion of the Gabba in the CBD framework in an attempt to ensure business is not adversely affected by the new arrangement.
The BT Group, operators of the Chalk Hotel, has approval for its plans for development of their site behind the Hotel after a challenge in the Courts. The development will change the skyline in Hawthorne St. Reid St and Hubert St whilst the streetscape in Stanley will look unchanged. Approval has been given to the development to be made up of 4 towers containing some retail at ground level and one and two bedroom apartments above. The hotel will also undergo some remodeling with the old Joe Richards store making way for an extension to the Hotel with a car parking podium above. The project will be developed over the next five to ten years depending on the state of the property market.
Mater has been active acquiring property around Annerley Rd and Stanley st intersection as well as constructing the extensions to the hospital. Pellicano has been active in Logan Road with two projects and now Stanley St with â€śTrafalgar Laneâ€ť. The site including Ford service Centre and the car yards in Ipswich Rd is progressing and we are seeing changes at No 1 Deshon St. So the Gabba is seeing something more than infrastructure being built, but what we are not seeing is the growth of small businesses in the Gabba. The Association hopes that with the new residential construction, growth in the service industries in the Gabba will come.
In November we had the Association Xmas party and the Treasurer reported that he had a good time. We have upgraded the website and conducted networking meetings at various members businesses. The next networking meeting will introduce the next project the Association hopes to lead to provide an exciting entrance to the Gabba off the Freeway and to utilise and link up the green spaces and pedestrian accesses and interlink green space architecture and projects involving neuroscience and entomology.
We have had a successful year thanks to my Treasurer Glenn Maymann, Vice President Suzanne Bosenquet and the committee of Paul Hey and Paul Ryan and the support from the Chalk Hotel, Councillor Helen Abrahams and our web site sponsors and networking meeting sponsors.
